Manchester United have reportedly seen an £89 million bid for Jadon Sancho rejected by Borussia Dortmund.
United’s 2-0 win over Leicester on Sunday – courtesy of goals from Bruno Fernandes and Jesse Lingard – secured a third-place finish for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side as well as the all-important Champions League place that goes with it.
Their return to Europe’s elite tournament is set to maximise their revenues, as well as the obvious riches and prestige supplied by competing in the Champions League, the Red Devils have also managed to avoid triggering a clause in their contract with Adidas which would have seen a 30 per cent drop in their £75m-a-year kit deal with the German kit suppliers.
However, their top four finish could now see Manchester United as one of the biggest spenders in Europe, even in spite of the global financial downturn amid the ongoing pandemic, with Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho said to be their number one transfer target.
The England international is believed to be keen on a move to Old Trafford, with some outlets even suggesting he has already agreed personal terms, though according to German publication Bild, United have now seen an opening offer of £89 million (€100m) rejected by Borussia Dortmund.
While it is believed that the Bundesliga runners up are willing to allow Sancho to return to England, and have already started looking for replacements, they are keen to collect their full asking price of €120m (£109m), a fee which would eclipse the British transfer record that United paid Juventus to bring Paul Pogba back to the club in 2016.
Sancho – who registered 17 goals and 16 assists in the league this season – is due to return to training with Dortmund on Thursday as the Bundesliga side prepares for the 2020/21 campaign which is due to get underway in September.
