Chelsea have announced the signing of 24-year-old RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner on a 5-year deal. The club note that he will join the Blues in July and is still to pass a medical.
The deal was an open secret as an agreement had reportedly been agreed for weeks. The Blues announced the deal on Thursday morning and this will undoubtedly be one of the big moves of the transfer window.
Werner has been a crucial player for RB Leipzig, playing 43 games for the German side this season and scoring 32 goals. In total, he has played 157 matches for them and scored 93 goals.
Werner has also been capped 29 times by his national team and scored 11 goals. He has moved to the Premier League for a fee believed to be in the region of 47.5 million pounds.
The player himself had this to say: “I am delighted to be signing for Chelsea, it is a very proud moment for me to be joining this great club. I of course want to thank RB Leipzig, the club and the fans, for four fantastic years. You will forever be in my heart. I look forward to next season with my new team-mates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans. Together we have a very successful future ahead of us”.
Werner could participate in Leipzig’s last two league matches against Dortmund and Augsburg but will play no part in their remaining Champions League games in August. Werner will earn more than 9 million pounds per year at Chelsea.
