The Spanish FA presidential elections will take place on 17th August. That is what the current president, Luis Rubiales, told the members of the Executive Committee. For now, the most likely scenario is that he gets reelected. The 17th September is the alternative date stipulated.
This would be the case if the High Council for Sports gave August as a non-working month or if another candidate appeared before 4th August. The person called to be the main competitor of the current president is Iker Casillas, who has not made a statement on this issue for a few months.
Rubiales himself confirmed these conditions after his announcement: “Elections will be held on 17th August if authorised by the CSD, and if August is not declared a working month, they will be held on 17th September”. In this way, although the call is official, the CSD can still modify it.
The call for these elections did not surprise anyone, as it was expected to take place on exactly the day it did. What is in the air is the appearance of another candidate with as much support as Rubiales – even Mariano Rajoy has been linked -, something that, according to the newspaper ‘AS’, is being sought “desperately” from the Federation.
