Legendary South African trumpeter and musician Hugh Masekela has passed on after a protracted battle with cancer.
Hugh Masekela who is widely regarded as the ‘father of South African jazz’ passed on at the age of 78.
The musician before his demise had a long battle with prostate cancer for about a decade since 2008 when he was first diagnosed.
His family has since made an official statement announcing the passing away of the revered musician.
‘After a protracted and courageous battle with prostate cancer, he passed peacefully in Johannesburg, South Africa surrounded by his family.’
During his active days Hugh Masekela wrote anti-apartheid songs which were popular in the fight for the release of Nelson Mandela.
