How To Fix Windows XP USB Major Problems

In this article section we will discuss how to fix windows XP major problems, As a computer user you will have come across various types of problems with your USB or system settings. The most common cases are “USB Device Not Recognized , “Windows was unable to complete the format” , “Problem ejecting USB mass storage device” , “The Device cannot start [code 10]“. These problems can be found for difference reason and we will see how to fix the problem.

 

i. FIX THE PROBLEM “USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZE”

At times when you plug in USB device in the port of your PC or Laptop, you will see a serious error message “USB Device Not Recognize”. To get this fix you have to follow the steps below.

* Press Windows key + R and type “regedt32.exe

* Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MachineSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesUSB

* If the Usb key is does not exist then create “usb” key under “Services”

* Under “Usb” key create a new DWORD value. Right click on the right pain of the “Rgistry Editor” and select “New > DWORD value”.

* Rename this newly created DWORD value as “DisableSelectiveSuspend”.

* Right Click on “DisableSelectiveSuspend” and select “Modify”. Put 1 in the “Value Data” field and then click on “OK”

 

Now you can reboot the computer and you can also try another way by remove the power supply without log off your computer and restart the computer. This process seldom works.

 

ii. FORMAT USB DRIVE IN COMMAND PROMPT

Generally we all format USB device by right clicking on the “Removable Drive” in “My Computer” window and selecting “Format“. But at times Windows can not format it and it gives a message “Windows was unable to complete the format“. By following the steps below you can format your USB drive in command prompt and solve the error occurring.

 

* Go to Start and click “Run” and type “cmd”

* Click on Ok or Press Enter then it will pop out command window

* In the command window type in “format E:FS:FAT32”  (the E within is the drive letter for USB on my computer it may be different letter on your computer, so you have to note the letter by opening “My Computer” window and see what letter your USB is) and “Fat32” is the file system.

* Now insert the USB stick to your computer and hit “ENTER”

* It will format your USB in Fat32 file system.

Now your USB is successfully formatted.

 

iii. FIX THE PROBLEM “ERROR CODE 10”

Maybe whenever you plug in USB drive in your windows XP computer and it shows an error message “This device cannot start (code 10)“. You don’t have to worry no more you can get it fix with the below steps.

 

* Go to “Start”  and click “Run” then type in “Devmgmt.msc” and click on “OK/Enter

* The “Device Manager” dialog box will appear, expand the “Universal Serial Bus Controllers

* Right Click on “USB Mass Storage Device” and select “Properties”

* Under the “General” tab you will see “Device Status” Note: Your USB must be plugged/connected

* If the “Device status” shows that “Error code 10” or anything like that, then you have to uninstall all of your USB controller.

(To Uninstall the USB controller right click on each of the USB controller under “Universal Serial Bus Controllers” and click on “Uninstall”).

* Restart the computer and the USB controllers will be automatically re-installed.

 

iv. SAFELY REMOVE YOUR USB DRIVE WITHOUT ANY ERROR

This is common error that usually occur when you want to remove USB by clicking on “Safely Remove Hardware” option in system tray and it will give error showing “The Device Generic Volume cannot be stopped Right Now” Try stopping the device later, if you ignore this error message and remove the USB drive, it may damage your USB.

You can fix this problem by using a free application called “Unlocker” which helps you to remove your USB drive safely.

* You can download Unlocker 1.8.7 and install it

Click Download within to Download it

* Right click on USB drive and select “Unlocker”

* An “Unlocker” window will appear, click on “Unlock all” to stop all running program in the USB drive.

Now you can safely remove the USB drive by clicking on “safely remove hardware” option from the system try.
